url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/13/mtv-denies-that-obama-telecast-is-political/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC'; Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT are giving an hour of free air time to President Obama less than three weeks before the midterm elections. The so-called “A Conversation with President Obama” will be live and commercial-free on six Viacom networks at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The networks will not give equal time to a Republican before the election, according to a spokeswoman. MTV denies that the Obama hour of TV is political, despite the timing, weeks before the midterm elections. “We’re not giving an hour of free time to the president to freely express his views. We’re hosting a town hall with 250 young people to ask questions of the president,”Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew said to HUMAN EVENTS. “This is not a campaign appearance. This is a town hall discussion.” The White House conceived of the concept and asked for the commercial-free TV time, according to Viacom. “MTV and BET had ‘asks’ into the White House to do something with the president,” explained McAndrew. She said that the White House “came back to both networks and said, ‘Hey we could do something. Would you consider doing something together?’” “We said, ‘Great! Let’s see if we can get some more networks who would [...]

The rare joint political appearance by Obama and Biden shows that the Democrats are worried about losing the Senate seat to Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell in the November 2 election. “Other than visiting the factories he’s closed or the unemployed he’s created, I can’t for the life of me fathom why the ultra-liberal President Obama would come to Delaware to campaign at taxpayer expense for the hyper-liberal Coons. Must be one heck of a thousand dollar a plate lunch,” O’Donnell campaign manager Matthew Moran said to HUMAN EVENTS. O’Donnell’s strong campaign has surprised the Democrats enough to bring in the big guns—Obama and Biden—to raise campaign cash for Coons. Biden has been to his home state of Delaware twice before to campaign for Coons. “President Obama’s visit to Delaware only reminds voters of the tax hikes, reckless spending, and out-of-control debt Chris Coons would no doubt rubberstamp if sent to Washington,” Chris Bond of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) said to HUMAN EVENTS.
url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/12/1160/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';President Obama is vehemently opposed to school choice, but had the audacity to invite the children profiled in Waiting for Superman to the White House for a photo-op on Monday. The documentary Waiting for Superman is about the failure of the U.S. education system, as seen through the eyes of five children who are desperate to get into charter schools. Obama’s slavish devotion to the teachers’ unions has led him to consistently oppose school vouchers. But, that didn’t stop him from using students from the documentary as political props in his Oval Office photo-op. The D.C. public school system is controlled by the federal government and is considered the worst system in the nation. Obama and his Education Secretary Arne Duncan have shut down D.C.’s popular, federally funded voucher program that allows low-income families in the District to send their children to private schools. Obama and his cohorts in the Democratic-controlled Congress have killed the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program, which chooses low-income families from a lottery to receive $7,500 in vouchers for private or parochial school. There have been four applicants for every slot in the scholarship program. In the President’s budget for 2011, he reduced by 25% the funding for the [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/11/president-obama-golfs-52-times-while-u-s-suffers/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';President Obama has played 52 rounds of golf in less than two years in office. The U.S. unemployment, down economy and two wars have not tampered his leisure time. In comparison, President Bush played a total of 24 rounds of golf in eight years. The pictures of the President wearing oxford-style, brown and white golf shoes and zipping around green golf courses in an electric cart are insensitive and inappropriate. While the United States is in a severe economic crisis, the unemployment rate is stuck at 9.6% and families struggle to make ends meet, Obama spends an average of four to five hours playing each 18-hole round of golf. Golf is a leisure activity for the well-to-do. The White House does not say if the President pays the green fees himself, but the cost for an 18-hole round of golf includes greens fees, cart rental, tips, clubs and balls. Obama plays with golf balls stamped with the number ”44,” which Titleist makes specially for him. Whether the President pays for the balls or accepts them as a gift is unclear. The President mostly plays taxpayer-funded military golf courses in the Washington, D.C., area. He’s played 18 times at the Fort Belvoir golf course in [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/08/nbc-flees-from-lefty-msnbc-cable-network/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';NBC is going to change the name of its popular website MSNBC.com so that the public does not associate it with the liberal cable network MSNBC. The cable network MSNBC unveiled this week “Lean Forward,” a new ad campaign which embraces its lefty agenda. At the same time, the mothership, NBC Universal and partner Microsoft ran the other way, taking the huge MSNBC website with them. “They want to change the name of the website because they don’t want the NBC name even more associated with MSNBC,” says a network insider. “NBC News doesn’t want to be known as the left-leaning, the ‘forward leaning’ outlet.” The corporate brass decision to disassociate its brands was caused by the public’s confusing the uber-liberal cable TV outlet with the straight-news website of the same name, according to internal memos obtained by The New York Times. The president of MSNBC.com, Charlie Tillinghast, wrote in one of the memos that “naming them the same thing is brand insanity.” MSNBC.com gets over 50 million users a month, making it the third biggest news website, after CNN.com and Yahoo. The NBC executives’ decision to change is a risky marketing maneuver and says a lot about how much the [...]

url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/10/06/charlie-rangel-ambushed-liberals-worship-disgraced-congressman/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';Disgraced Congressman Charlie Rangel attempted to escape reality by diving into a crowd of adoring lefties at the “One Nation Working Together” rally at the Lincoln Memorial. The Harlem Democrat is about to stand trial to defend against 13 counts of ethical charges by his colleagues in the House, but you wouldn’t know it if you saw him being treated like a rock star on Saturday. Rangel sported enormous black sunglasses and delved into the crowds, who cheered “Charlie, Charlie!” A happy-go-lucky Charlie hugged the fans, glad-handed and yelled “I love you!” Well, Charlie tried to escape reality, but HUMAN EVENTS gave him a reality check. “I know you want your ethical hearing to happen before the midterm elections,” I said to Rangel. “That’s not at issue today, Miss,” he responded from behind his big black sunglasses. “I’m saying, ‘Not today.’ Okay? I’m trying to be as nice and polite as I can be,” he said. “And this is an occasion for the country to be together.” “But you do have a pending ethical hearing coming up,” I replied. The liberal group of union members, migrant farm workers, NAACP members and gay rights advocates seemingly had no one agenda, other than, well protesting. The sign-carrying, T-shirt wearing crowd support the Democratic House and Senate leadership and President Obama, so they couldn’t answer a simple question, “Who are you protesting against?” A young woman was standing on the Lincoln Memorial in a red T-shirt for the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC). She would only give her first name, Meridiana, but said quite proudly on video that she’s “undocumented.” Unabashed at giving away her illegal immigration status, she said she came to D.C. to ask Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-N.V.) to move on the DREAM Act. “I was brought here at the age of seven, and I’m currently waiting on the legislation from the DREAM Act to pass so I can continue my education and going to school,” she told me. Sitting across the grass from Meridiana, Meryl Johnson was holding a hand-made sign that read, “THANK GOD for Teachers Unions.” Johnson is the director of Community Engagement for the Cleveland Teachers Union. Asked if [...]

Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is an advocate of more government spending as a way to strengthening the economy. He believes that raising Americans’ taxes is necessary to pay for big-government spending. Ryan supports the tax hike on small businesses which will go into effect on January 1. HUMAN EVENTS caught up with Ryan after a press conference in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. He was unabashed in his liberal views on the economy. Ryan said raising taxes on small businesses is necessary “because we have huge deficits. We gotta shore up Social Security. We gotta shrink our deficits.” “Where are we going to get that money?” he asked. “Cutting spending,” I responded. “Where?” asked Ryan. “I’m not on the Appropriations Committee. That would be your job,” I said, referring to his position on the powerful House committee that determines spending for the federal government. The lower tax rates signed into law by President Bush in 2001 and 2003 are set to expire on December 31, at which point, every American will pay higher taxes.
url='http://www.emilymillerdc.com/2010/09/29/top-10-unfinished-business-left-by-pelosi-and-reid/';size='small';username='@EmilyMillerDC';The Democrats are so scared of losing control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections, that they are packing up and leaving D.C. to spend more time on the campaign trail. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced she is closing up shop on Thursday, but could skip town as early as Wednesday. Joining her on the cruise to nowhere, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-N.V.) announced the Senate will adjourn on Friday. The American people have an absentee Congress, whose leaders choose politics over getting work done. Pelosi and Reid promised much would be accomplished this year, but ended with not even completing the major spending and tax legislation needed to help the faltering economy. The top 10 most important pieces of legislation left unfinished by the do-nothing Congress, led by Relosi and Reid include: 1. Cut Taxes: Thanks to the congressional Democrats’ inactino, every American will pay more taxes on January 1.
